Research
I research the intersection of democracy, citizenship, and education, examining how education both enables and constrains individuals' participation in democratic processes. My work takes a sociocultural perspective, using ethnographic and qualitative research methods to explore how civic education unfolds in diverse and conflict-ridden contexts.
My research focuses on three main strands:
Citizenship and Civic Education – How students and educators conceptualize and experience citizenship.
Multicultural, Diversity, and Anti-Racist Education – How education addresses social diversity and fosters inclusive democratic values.
Teacher Education – How educators are prepared to teach democracy and civic engagement in complex social realities.
Current research projects
I am currently leading two projects that explore these themes in depth:
🔹 Civics in the Margins – A four-year study examining how marginalized youth conceptualize and practice citizenship, using participatory research methods to amplify voices often excluded from civic life. Click to learn more.
🔹 GlobalSense – A three-year international collaboration investigating how teacher education can better prepare future educators for global citizenship, fostering cross-border dialogue and engagement. Click to learn more.
Previous research projects
I will be adding more about my previous projects shortly.
